Plan the whole outfit as one commission
When the occasion matters, it can be easier to plan the whole outfit together instead of piecing garments together one by one. From R & I Macdonald Kilt Makers in West Calder, we help you commission coordinated Highland wear for weddings, graduations and formal occasions, with choices that can include a hand sewn kilt, trews, a jacket, a waistcoat and specially ordered finishing touches. That gives you more control over how the tartan, cloth, colour and level of formality work together. It also means the finished outfit feels settled from the start, rather than corrected later.

Compare tartans, fabrics and garment routes
Choice matters, but it is most useful when it helps you narrow things down. With R & I Macdonald Kilt Makers, you can view tartan samples from more than one weaver and ask us to help source a tartan that is not currently in the shop. We can then talk through made-to-measure jackets and waistcoats, Crail styles, stock-size jackets, made-to-measure trews outfits and the fabric families that suit them, including tweeds, baratheas and other jacketing cloths. The result is a personalised outfit shaped by how and where you expect to wear it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you source a tartan that is not in the shop?
Yes. If the tartan you want is not currently available to view in the shop, we can help source it through the weavers we work with. It helps to know any family, band or colour preference at the start so the search is more focused and useful.
Do I need to choose a kilt, or can I have trews instead?
You do not have to choose a kilt. A bespoke Highland outfit can include trews, and some customers prefer them for comfort, styling or repeat wear. We can compare both routes with you and shape the rest of the outfit around the choice that suits best.
How do jackets and accessories fit into the commission?
Once the tartan and main garment direction are settled, we can coordinate the rest of the outfit through jacket and waistcoat style, fabric choice and the finishing touches that complete the look. Treating those decisions together usually gives a calmer, more consistent result.
