Family run traditional hand sewn Kiltmakers
R & I MacDonald was first founded as a business in the mid-1980s with Isobel (Ella) at the helm of the sewing team, before this point Isobel had been making kilts for other companies in and around Scotland. Isobel served her apprenticeship in the mid-1940s with R.G.Lawrie of Glasgow, and starting sewing kilts at the age of just 14.
In the late 1980s Robert (Isobel's husband) changed his career path, thus bringing him into the business and picking up some of the sewing workload. Hence the name R & I MacDonald Kiltmakers.

Around the beginning of the 1990’s, we took the plunge and acquired our first retail outlet and workspace. Our original workshop is just round the corner from our current location and our first shop is just 200 yards up the road from our current location. 1998 brought the opportunity to move to 45 Main Street where we have since become a well known and established name in the central belt.

The Business is currently owned and run by Todd, (Robert and Isobel's son) who you will find there most days of the week along with a number of other family and team members.
